Jimmie Foxx was named the Most Valuable Player as he led the Boston Red Sox to a 7-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds to claim the title of the 1938 Tournament.

Foxx drilled a pair of two-run homers in the championship tilt to give him four long balls during the single elimination event.

In four contests, Foxx was 10-of-19 (.526) at the plate driving in 13 runs with a pair of triples.

Boston scored twice in the first inning off Cincinnati starter Paul Derringer as Foxx smacked his initial blast of the day in Fenway Park.

Gene Desautels added to Boston’s lead with a RBI single in the fourth.

The Reds picked up a run in the top of the sixth against Boston starter Lefty Grove as Frank McCormick singled to cut Cincinnati’s deficit to 3-1.

An error by Reds shortstop Billy Myers helped the Red Sox answer in the bottom of the sixth. Ben Chapman doubled with two outs before Myers miscue on a grounder by Bobby Doerr made it 4-1.

Cincinnati picked up a pair of runs in the seventh as Nolen Richardson had a pinch-hit RBI single. The second score came home when Lonny Frey hit into a fielder’s choice and it was 4-3.

Jim Weaver took over on the mound for the Reds in the bottom of the seventh as Doc Cramer led off with a double. After Joe Vosmik grounded out, Foxx smashed his second homer to put the Red Sox ahead 6-3.

Doerr hit a solo homer off Weaver in the eighth for the final run of the contest.

Grove (2-0) went the distance for Boston allowing nine hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

Derringer (1-1) was tagged with the loss as he worked six innings giving up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Weaver tossed the final two frames for the Reds as he surrendered three runs on three hits with a strikeout.
