RICHMOND, Ind. – Jake Miller entered the clubhouse at Highland Lake Golf Course with a 68 on Saturday a short time later Ryan Chalfant came in with the same score.
As a result, the duo leads the 89th annual Richmond City Amateur Championship after the first round.
“I left a lot out there,” Miller said of his score in the championship flight. “Going into this week, I was really confident in my game. I’m really happy.”
Chalfant spent the day with his son Hayden serving as his caddie.
“That was awesome, I loved having him on the bag,” Chalfant said. “He was really big for me. I don’t know how many times he read a putt. We had a really good time today.”
The flights playing at Forest Hills Country Club on Sunday’s final day are the championship, seniors and B. Elks Country Club hosts the A, C and D flights.
Miller heads into the final round with a plan.
“Just play my game,” Miller said. “I play out there every day, so I know that golf course. It’s just one shot at a time. If I stick to that, it should be pretty good.”
The City Am winner in 2016, Chalfant is looking forward to Sunday’s round.
“Jake is a great player,” Chalfant said. “We’ll have to go out and play well tomorrow to compete with him. It will be my first time out there this year, but typically that course is really good to me.”
Following Miller and Chalfant in the championship flight are last year’s winner Matt Herig (71), Jeremy Delucio (73) and Garrett Schuler (73) to round out the top five.
The top score of the day came from 18-time championship flight winner Skip Runnels, who leads the Senior Flight with a 66. He is the defending champ in that flight.
In the A Flight, there is a three-way tie for the lead as Eric Davis, Rick Killion and Ryan Seal each finished with a 75.
Andy Craig had the top score in the B Flight with an 83. Darin McFarland posted an 84 to lead the C Flight list. In the D Flight, Jackson Cook leads with an 89.
