Football Preview: Winchester

Winchester Head Coach Mike Jones is entering his sixth season with the Golden Falcons.

WINCHESTER, Ind. –
Winchester Head Coach Mike Jones must find a way to replace All-Tri-Eastern Conference performers Elias Gates and Jon Thornburg.

“Our expectations never change,” said Jones, who is in his sixth season with the Golden Falcons. “We expect that our players represent our program in a positive way.”

“We expect that they are great students,” Jones continued. “It’s our job as coaches to get the most out of them as football players. Their job is to give us great effort each day.”

The leading returnees for the Golden Falcons from last year’s co-champs in the TEC are Kyle Nelson, Jevin Malkey, Boo Enis, Jordan Key and Austin England.

“Our returning players are always the ones that we expect to lead and teach the culture of our program to our younger, less experienced players,” Jones said.

Enis is the top receiver back as he grabbed 17 passes last year for 214 yards and a score. Key had 10 catches and 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

England is the leading tackler back on defense as he had 71 stops last fall.

Winchester opens the season at home on Friday against South Adams. The Golden Falcons visit Northeastern the other defending co-champ in the TEC on Friday, Aug. 25.

“I think that the players and coaches in the TEC are often overlooked,” Jones said. “Hagerstown, Centerville, and Northeastern are clearly the favorites this year.”

“Our sectional is new this season, but we work to be at our best come tournament time, so I always like our chances in October and November,” Jones added.
