Centerville Wins 8th Straight TEC Title

Centerville won its eighth TEC championship in a row on May, 15, 2017.

LEWISVILLE, Ind. – The Centerville girls tennis team won all four of its matches in the finals on Monday to claim its eighth straight Tri-Eastern Conference title.

“They all played real well,” Centerville Head Coach Randy Ecker said.

The Bulldogs won the TEC Tournament at Tri with 63 points, while Hagerstown finished with 32. Winchester, which had the other champion was third with 26 points.

The other team scores were Tri and Union City tied with nine, Northeastern and Lincoln tied at 3 and Union County had 0.

In the only three set contest of the final round Centerville’s Chloe Uphaus defeated Lanie McClanahan of Hagerstown 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

“Chloe had her spurts, but everyone else came out and really dominated play,” Ecker said. “They did a really good job. It’s what you want heading into sectional.”

Centerville’s Addie Walther won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles over Hagerstown’s Abby Sheperd.

The Bulldogs swept the doubles competition as they won their 20th overall championship.

Shelby Good and Lizzy Wather beat Hagerstown’s Mekayla Todd and Kayla Vinson 6-0, 6-0 in the top position, while the No. 2 team of Katy Stewart and Morgan Guenther won 6-1, 6-0 over Winchester’s Kate Hendrickson and Brianna Bogue.

Winchester’s Mariah Roberts won 6-0, 6-1 over Hagerstown’s Jacqueline Habzanski at No. 1 singles.

“I’ve really worked hard for it,” said Roberts, who finished second in the conference tournament a year ago. “I played as hard as I could to get it over. I really wanted to win because last year I got to the finals.”

Winchester Head Coach Dennis Streeter was impressed.

“She’s a pretty strong player and only lost one game,” he said. “I’m pretty proud of her. She plays all of the time and you can tell.”

All of the TEC teams begin sectional play later this week. Centerville, Hagerstown, Northeastern and Lincoln are at Richmond. Winchester and Union City compete at Jay County. Tri is at New Castle, while Union County plays in Connersville.
