Kelley Throws No-Hitter for Tigers

HAGERSTOWN, Ind. – Trey Kelley tossed a no-hitter on Tuesday as he and his Hagerstown teammates defeated Seton Catholic 19-0 on Lloyd Michael Field.

Kelley allowed only two base runners to earn his second win of the season.

“Coming into the season, we thought we had a pretty solid team offensively and defensively,” Hagerstown coach Brad Catey said. “These guys have been hitting all year long. We just played a great all around game today.”

In his five innings on the mound, Kelley walked one and had another reach on an error.

“He threw great against Richmond, so we knew he was going to come out and throw a great game,” Catey said. “Trey’s not afraid to use his defense, which helps him out a lot.”

Kelley had 10 strikeouts and needed a diving grab in centerfield by Cody Swimm on a solid drive by Seton’s Lou Falcone in the fourth inning.

“I was glad I got to bounce back and pitch again,” Kelley said. “Cody Swimm saved my butt.”

Although he retired the last 13 batters he faced, Kelley said a win against a sectional opponent and improving as the season progresses are more important.

“We’ve got to get better and work to that sectional,” Kelley said. “That’s all that matters.”

Seton coach Jake Carr had the same feeling about his squad.

“Kelley threw a great game,” Seton coach Jake Carr said. “He threw really well and we weren’t ready to play.”

“We’re going to get better,” Carr continued. “In two months, we’re going to be a much better baseball team. They are a heck of a team and we’re got to chase that now.”

Hagerstown began the contest with 10 runs in the first inning. Mason Hicks highlighted the outburst with a two-run homer.

The Tigers added seven more in the second with Kory Beeson blasting a grand slam and Hicks adding a three-run shot accounting for all of the runs in the frame.

Cameron Purtha finished the scoring in the fourth with a two-run double.

Hicks, Beeson and Drew Pyle each had two hits for the Tigers.

Hagerstown (2-0) travels to Wapahani on Thursday.
