Golden Eagles Post TEC Victory

CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. – The Lincoln boys basketball team edged No. 10 Hagerstown 62-61 in Tri-Eastern Conference action on Tuesday.

Lincoln’s Hunter Ferris hit the first of two free throw attempts with six seconds remaining to provide the end result.

“Those are hard shots for a 17-18-year old to step up there,” Lincoln coach Rodney Klein said.

“What a crowd we had tonight,” Klein continued. “It was a sectional atmosphere. We’re fortunate to get out of here with a win.”

With the scored tied at 61-61, Ferris grabbed a rebound as he was fouled by Hagerstown’s Isaiah Neal.

“They did a good job of attacking all night long,” Hagerstown coach Bobby Jones said. “We just flat out didn’t guard. Lincoln’s players were ready from the get go

“As bad as we played, Lincoln had a lot to do with that,” Jones added. “All of the credit goes to them. They deserved to beat us.”

Hagerstown led 16-13 at the first stop, but the Golden Eagles were on top 34-33 by halftime. Hagerstown finished the third period on top 51-49 to set the stage for a fourth quarter battle.

“I’m super proud of our kids,” Klein said. “We fought through some stuff and some adversity and I thought we did a really good job. They did a really good job of executing the game plan.”

“Hagerstown is so tough defensively and physical,” Klein added. “You almost have to play perfect against them. We did some good things.”

Ferris led the Golden Eagles with 21 points as he played the entire second half with four fouls.

“Hunter has been playing well the last few weeks,” Klein said. “We talked to him at halftime and told him you just have to play off your man a little bit.”

Garrett Pumphrey tossed in 15 points for Lincoln and grabbed 13 rebounds. Chase Southerland had 16 points with a dozen in the third frame.

Jared Andis Jalen Oliver led the Tigers with 19 points each, while Oliver pulled down 15 rebounds. Neal contributed 10 points.

Hagerstown won the JV contest 48-33 as Caleb Neal led the way with 16 points. Branton Payne added 13 points. For Lincoln, Keaton Southerland had nine points.

Both teams are back in action this weekend. Lincoln travels to Winchester for a TEC affair, while Hagerstown visits Lapel on Saturday.
