Lincoln Wins TEC Contest with Indians

CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. – The Lincoln boys basketball team defeated Union City 75-44 in Tri-Eastern Conference action on Friday night.

“We did a really nice job in the second quarter,” Lincoln coach Rodney Klein said. “Then the first three minutes of the third quarter sealed the deal.”

The Golden Eagles led 20-17 with 7:16 left in the first half before the scored eight straight points to lead 28-17. Following a goaltending against Lincoln’s Garrett Pumphrey, the Golden Eagles finished the period with nine points in a row to lead 37-19 at the intermission.

“Defensively, we didn’t come to play,” Union City coach David Barger said. “We worked on things in practice all week and we talked about what we needed to do. We never met the challenge.”

After three frames, Lincoln led 59-30.

“I thought our execution tonight was as good as we’ve had all season,” Klein said. “We took everything we did this week in practice and it carried over. Our kids did a very nice job of reading things and made the extra pass.”

“Union City is on the rise,” Klein added. “They’ve got some kids who can play. They rebound so well. They did hurt us on the glass a little bit.”

Union City had a 40-32 advantage in rebounds with 19 coming at the offensive end for the Indians.

Chase Southerland led the Golden Eagles with 24 points with seven 3-pointers. Pumphrey added 19 with eight rebounds and six blocks. Hunter Ferris ended his night with 16 points and six assists.

For the Indians, Trevor Spence led the way with 13 points. Isaac Jefferis tossed in 10 points as did Trevor Thompson, who grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles won the JV game 48-46 with Cameron Gwin leading the way with 23 points. Hayden Pierce finished with nine points. Akili Roberts topped the Indians with 14 points as teammate Mason Good tossed in 13.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Lincoln (9-3, 2-0) visits Cowan, while Union City (2-10, 1-2) entertains Wapahani.
