PERSHING, Ind. – Traditionally, the 19th hole is supposed to be a fun time to talk about a golf round.

On Saturday, the 19th hole took on a different meaning as the Union County and Hagerstown boys golf teams needed some extra work to decide which squad would be the Tri-Eastern Conference champions for 2016.

“Both teams played wonderful,” Union County Head Coach Tony Gulley said after his team survived the extra hole to claim the title. “It’s just sad that one of us had to lose. I’m the lucky one. I’m very proud of my boys.”

After playing to a 331-331 tie through 18 holes, Union County finished one shot better in the playoff as all five players from each team competed on the first hole at Winding Branch Golf Club.

“We didn’t play well on the front side,” Hagerstown Head Coach Bill Mullin said. “We played better on the back.”

“The kids played great in the playoff, but my hats off to Union County,” Mullin added. “They are the ones who won this thing. They are a very deserving champion.”

Union County’s Jake Antrim clinched the first title for the Patriots since 2014 as he made his final putt on the playoff hole.

“It’s tense,” Antrim said. “It is just a crazy feeling to know that both of our teams are so well matched that we had to come down and play even more.”

“That’s why I love this,” Antrim continued. “It’s great competition. I’m glad that we did come out on top.”

Centerville was third with a 342, while Northeastern was fourth with a 358. Winchester was fifth as the Falcons won the tiebreaker with Tri as both squads had a 382. Union City finished with a 406 and Lincoln had a 434.

Rader Medalist

Centerville’s Mason Rader was the medalist for the second time in his career as he carded a 74 to lead the field.

“I had a pretty good day,” Rader said. “It could have lower. I left some shots out there, but it feels good to finally put a good round together.”

“The wind was a big factor and a lot of hazzards you can get in trouble with, but the wind was probably the biggest factor,” Rader added. “I’m really happy I did it again.”

Rader shot a 75 to earn the honor in 2014.

Antrim along with Hagerstown teammates Ben Tinkle and Kyle Cochran all finished second overall with a 78.

The other members of the All-TEC Team were Tyler Dunn (Union County) 80, Konner Fabrick (Tri) 80, Garrett Schuler (Northeastern) 81, Caleb Cochran (Hagerstown) 83, Skyler Benedict (Centerville) 85 and Dillon Miller (Union County) 85.
