Coffman Qualifies for the State Finals

Union County’s Tucker Coffman finished second in the New Castle Semi-State on Feb. 10.

NEW CASTLE, Ind. –
Union County’s Tucker Coffman finished second during Saturday’s New Castle Semi-State, but that was good enough to keep wrestling this season.

Coffman (41-6) was the only Tri-Eastern Conference wrestler to qualify for next weekend’s state finals at Bankers Life in Indianapolis.

The first round starts on Friday at 6 p.m. The rest of the event begins on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

In Saturday’s title match at 160, Coffman lost 11-0 to Carmel’s Jack Eiteljorge (37-2).

The Union County junior started the day with a pin of Drake Kendrex of Mount Vernon (Fortville) at 3:33.

He followed that win with a pin of Jeremiah Ford of Southport at 3:04 to earn his ticket to the state meet as a top four finisher.

In the semifinal contest, Coffman posted a 7-6 victory over Anthony Mosconi of Indianapolis Cathedral.

Calderon Wins

Centerville’s Alfreo Calderon (38-3) was the only other TEC competitor to win in the first round at New Castle or Ft. Wayne.

Calderon beat Ranvir Sandhu of Hamilton Southeastern at 170 in a 15-2 major decision. In the next round, he was pinned by Greenfield-Central’s Brad Lowe, who was the eventual runner-up in the weight class.
