Golden Falcons Reach Regional Finale

SPEEDWAY, Ind. –
Maddie Lawrence scored 24 points and grabbed 22 rebounds as the Winchester girls basketball team defeated Covenant Christian 49-32 in Saturday’s opener of the Class 2A Speedway Regional.

The fourth-ranked Golden Falcons (24-2) will meet No. 8 Triton Central (21-4) for the regional title later on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers beat South Putnam 65-40 to advance to the finale.

“The evening game will be the bigger challenge of the two,” Winchester Head Coach Holly Gutierrez said.

Winchester led 13-2 at the end of the first quarter.

“The girls executed the game plan to perfection,” Gutierrez said. “They took out Mikayla Cleary and Whitney Anderson. Maddie hit the boards hard.”

The Golden Falcons were on top 23-15 at the intermission as Lawrence had 16 points and 17 rebounds. They were able to maintain that advantage by the end of the third as they led 39-23.

In addition to Lawrence, Winchester had two others in double figures.

Kira Robinson had 12 points, eight rebounds and six blocks.

Hannah Graft tossed in 10 points.

The Warriors (16-10) were led by Sania Borom, who had 10 points. Cleary came in averaging 16.5 PPG and she finished with eight points. Anderson didn’t score.
